It’s the mane, that gives the lion its ferocious look. Surprisingly enough, it is that same mane that gives this mushroom that graceful look. In earlier posts we have looked at how to grow mushrooms using straw logs, how to grow mushrooms in coffee grounds and how to grow morel mushrooms. That means you are more than ready to learn how to grow lion’s mane mushroom in a jar.
Native to Asia, Europe and North America, the scientific name is Hericium Erinaceus. Although, most gardeners use plastic bags and humidifiers when growing lion’s mane mushroom. This method uses jars as a growing medium, which helps to increase your success rate but then at the same time the yield becomes an issue. However, the type of substrate you use, the growing environment as well as the amount of substrate used can ultimately help boost your yield.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- pressure cooker
- jars
- mixing bowl
- brown rice flour
- vermiculite
- LC syringe
- rubbing alcohol
- butane torch
- micro-pore tape
- water
- screw driver
- aluminum foil
The first step involves prepping the substrate mixture and then setting up the jar lids. Then you move on to sterilizing the jars using your pressure cooker for at least an hour or so. The inoculation stage requires a thoroughly sterile environment, and that also includes the room you will be working in. Very little air flow is vital at this stage.
There is 72 to 96 hour waiting period after inoculation, before you can relocate the jars for fruiting to commence. Often the mushrooms will start fruiting sooner than you expect, usually they should be ready for harvest within 4 to 8 weeks. You’ll need a knife and a spoon to harvest your lion’s mane mushroom from the jars. Expected yield is about one to two ounces of mushrooms per jar.
