How To Grow Mushrooms In Used Coffee Grounds

Mushrooms were one of the things I really wanted to learn how to grow when I first started gardening. Fast forward a couple of years, now I know how to grow oyster mushrooms as well as these diy mushroom grow kits. My new ‘neighbor’ Mable recently took out the time to show me how to grow mushrooms in used coffee grounds.

The best varieties to grow in this medium are Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms. Personally, I prefer oyster mushrooms. One would think that you require complicated equipment to set up your own mushroom farm, but that is not the case at all. In fact, you can use recycled materials and that in turn saves you tons of money. The whole process is not complicated at all, especially if you can follow simple step by step instructions.

Here’s What You’ll Need

Determine the level of your coffee grounds by filling up the bucket with the coffee grounds and marking the level on the side. Then grab your drill and make a few holes for carbon dioxide release all the way around about half way between the marked level and the rim. Refill the bucket with the coffee grounds and moisten them if necessary.

Carefully work your mushroom spawn with sawdust into about an inch of the top of the coffee grounds and cover with the perforated plastic film. Use the pen to poke a few holes into the the plastic film. Find a dark location to keep your bucket in. Your daily routine should involve removing the cover and spraying a little water on the coffee grounds.

Within 15 to 20 days white patches should start to appear on the surface. At this point, it is time to remove the plastic and move the bucket to a brighter warm location. The recommended temperature is between 60 to 75 degrees F. In order to keep the substrate moist, make sure to spray water two times every day. Mushrooms should start to appear in about 7 days or so.
