Whenever I get my hands on some mushrooms, I always make sure to add some to almost everything I cook, and I mean everything. It is funny though, I had never thought about growing oyster mushrooms before, until I read this post earlier today.
Did you know that oyster mushrooms are one of the popular edible species grown worldwide? They are also not difficult to grow. You can purchase the spawn online from Amazon or eBay, and the rest of the equipment that is needed, is already lying in your backyard garden shed.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- mushroom spawn
- beeswax
- fresh hardwood log or branch
- handheld drill
- 3/8″ drill bit
- rubber hammer
- small glass container or can
- pastry brush
- tape measure
- marker
- burlap
It looks like depending on your spawn, you most likely will require hardwood for this project. The perfect size for your logs is about 3 to 4 inches in diameter and anything between 3 to 4 feet long. They grow quicker when the branch is not too wide, however they also tend to use up the nutrients much faster too.
Your beeswax is melted in a small can close to your logs. Make sure you mark your log before drilling the holes 6 to 8 inches apart and in rows at least 2 inches apart. Use the rubber hammer to inoculate the wood with your spawn.
Before setting your logs away in a nice shady area with a lot of moisture, make sure that you have covered all the holes and even the ends with the melted beeswax. You can water the logs every 7 to 14 days and even wrap them in burlap to help keep the moisture in. Now all you need is patience, it may take months before the mushrooms eventually sprout, sometimes up to 6 months.
