I know most people think that you only find these in the wild, but I am here to let you know that you can actually grow your own morels in your backyard. In previous blogs we have talked about how to grow mushrooms in used coffee grounds and also growing oyster mushrooms. If you read those post you should be ready to take on these too.
Their scientific name is Morchella esculenta and they prefer to grow during the cold season. In the wild they are often seen growing in between the winter and spring seasons. Having said that, it is important to note that it is actually not easy to grow these mushrooms. You many need to try to get them to germinate a few times before tasting success. Morels are high in protein and fiber, but are also a source of magnesium as well as iron.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- distilled water
- molasses
- salt
- morel spores
- cheesecloth
- leaves
- sharp knife
- air tight container
- wood chips
- peat moss
- stainless steel pot
In order to increase your chances of success you have to try simulate the perfect growing conditions for your morels. The location has to be well shaded, with less than 3 hours of sunlight a day. The idea soil temperature is between 55 and 59 degrees F. Then you have to prep the area and make your wood chips, ashes and peat moss growing medium.
Next, you have to make your growing kit using the spores. This is the liquid that you will pour over the prepared area, cover with leaves and hope that within 10 days you have some mushrooms stalks poking out. It takes less than 7 days for the morels to be ready for harvest. Use a sharp knife to cut them then you have two to three days to enjoy them fresh if store in your fridge. Otherwise you can either freeze them or dry them for latter consumption.
