What do you get when you sow lemon and grass seeds, in the same container? Nope, that is not how to grow lemongrass, silly! LOL Instead, did you know that just like you can regrow lettuce from scraps, you can also grow lemongrass from kitchen scraps?
There is probably no other easier gardening method, than one that involves regrowing vegetable scraps. Which is perfect for most people, instead of throwing away the scraps you can regrow them and save money in the long term. Just head over to a neighbor’s garden, grocery store or farmer’s market for your initial batch. Cook some and regrow the rest, it is a perfect win-win situation.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- lemongrass
- glass
- water
- sharp knife
- container
- potting soil
- fish emulsion fertilizer
It is best to use fresh stalks when using this glass and water method. This in turn speeds up the rooting process which can take anywhere from 7 to 21 days, depending on the ‘freshness’ of the stalk. Once the stalk has established a decent root system, it can then then be transferred to a small container. Just make sure that the container you use has adequate drainage.
Your plant should always have access to sunlight, whether in the glass or container. You have the choice of transplanting to a larger pot or your garden. The pot will allow you to move the stalks indoors when the temperatures drop. I usually have some in the garden and some in containers, that way we have an endless supply all year round.
