If only all the vegetables in my garden were this easy to regrow. We would have way more fresh produce to enjoy and only hput in half the required work. LOL! A girl can only dream… right? A few years back, in my earlier blog posts I showed you how to regrow onions from onions and also how to regrow celery. Well today we shall be taking a look at how to regrow leeks from leeks.
There are actually many vegetables that you can regrow from your kitchen scraps. These are the simple vegetable gardening techniques, that you should perhaps be sharing with your kids in order to get them excited about gardening. Using this method you can literally regrow leeks that you buy from your local grocery store or farmer’s market. No additional rooting hormones or fertilizers are needed. Just some clean water and a glass jar and you are good to go.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- fresh leeks
- water
- water glass or glass jar
- sharp knife
- cutting board
- large container (optional)
- potting soil (optional)
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Use a sharp knife to chop off the bottom white ends of the leeks with the roots.
Step 2.
Place the white root ends in a glass jar.
Step 3.
Half fill the jar with water, making sure to cover at least half of your leek ends.
Step 4.
Place the jar in a location that recieves a lot of daily sunlight e.g. a window sill.
Step 5.
Remember to change the water in the jar, every other day.
Now all you need is a little patience. Check on your leeks daily and you should start to see new green sprouts within the first 3 days. After about a week a new long green shoot 4 to 5 inches long should now be visible. There should also be more extensive root growth, which means that your leeks are now ready for transplant into a larger container or your garden. Handle with care and be careful not to disturb or damage the root formation when transplanting.
