Here’s one of those rare or you may even call exotic  that not very many people grow or use. However those that do use it, absolutely love it. I am one of those that has grown to love it, so this summer I decided to learn how to grow lemongrass.

What can you use lemongrass for? Well you can chop it up and add it your soups, smoothies and stir fries. I have also started to add it to my rice to give it a different lemony like flavor. I am looking forward to trying to use it in more dishes too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• lemongrass seeds or stalks
• small pots or containers
• compost
• worm castings

Lemongrass does not do well in the colder temperatures so it would be a good idea that you grow it in pots and you can take them inside when it gets too cold. Regardless make sure you have a well drained soil, and there is maximum exposure to the sun. The seeds germinate very fast and well.

If you are using the stalks just cut them and place them in about an inch of water, they are ready for transplanting when they grow some roots and new leaves start form.When planting the perfect spacing is two to three inches apart. Don’t forget to apply compost oreven worm castings. Keep well watered and watch small stalks start to grow on the outer sides.

Harvesting is a simple process, just pull at the base. The inner stalk is what you cook, if you like lemongrass tea you can use the leaves to make the tea. I haven’t tried the tea, but that is definetely something that I will try at least once. Lemongrass also has some additional medicinal benefits which help fight cancer, inflammation, diabetes, anremia and more.
