How To Grow Loquats

If you are not familiar with them, you would think that they were apricots. We now have a lot of exotic fruit growing in our backyard like the starfruit and the quince. But as I always say, there is room for more. That is why I recently did some research on how to grow loquats.

The Loquat tree (Eriobotrya japonica) is originally from China and also know as the Chinese plum. Now more commonly grown in Spain (Nispero), Algeria, Japan as well as Brazil. The trees can either be grafted or grown from seed. Grafted trees will start bearing fruit within 2 to 3 years versus those grown from seed which take between 8 to 10 years. As for taste, think of what a combination of an apple and peach would taste like. Most people enjoy them as is, in fruit salads, jams as well as preserves.

How To Grow Loquats

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • loquat seeds or seedlings
  • fresh compost
  • potting soil
  • small container
  • mulch (optional)

Start the seeds indoors and transplant them into small containers, before planting them in your orchard. There are very few plants that do well in any soil type. This is one of them, just makes sure that it is located in an area that gets a lot of daily sunlight. Not only do they thrive in any soil, they also do not require too much water.

Once established, you probably won’t have to worry about watering it as long as you receive a good amount of rainfall. They usually begin flowering in autumn and then through the winter months too. By the time Spring arrives, you should start seeing small fruit which is ready for harvest when it turns yellowish orange in color.
