It’s gardening season and it is time to start thinking about new stuff to grow in our garden this year. Last year we tried growing cannellini beans as well as growing butter beans and that experiment turned out pretty well. So this year I thought we would try growing navy beans and see how that turns out.
Isn’t it amazing just how many different bean varieties there are out there? We have probably grown our fair share of them, but every single year I discover yet another one. The good thing though is that they are usually very easy to grow. Seriously anyone can grow any type of bean, it is usually that easy.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- navy beans
- mulch
- compost
- trellis (optional)
- fish emulsion fertilizer (optional)
When it comes to planting beans, you want to direct sow them into the ground. Initially you can plant them about 4 inches apart and then go on to thing them out to about 6 inches apart. They will require a lot of sun as well as well drained soil that is also slightly acidic. Your rows should be at least 2 feet apart and also make sure that the eye of the bean faces downwards.
The good news is that beans will fix their own nitrogen, therefore no fertilizer is required in most cases. When watering try to keep the water off the leaves, to avoid promoting the growth of fungus. Allow up to 80 days before harvesting the mature beans, however you can start enjoying them as soon as you feel they are firm enough to munch on.
