Fiddle dee, fiddle dum, fiddle what? LOL Just like when I shared how to grow quince and how to grow feijoas on this blog, you most likely have never heard of this vegetable before. However, do not worry let’s just say today is your lucky day. We are going to look at how to grow fiddleheads in your garden.

First things first, it is important to note that you actually want to be growing ferns. We will the harvest the sprouts and cook them, these are your ‘fiddleheads’. There are many different edible ferns you can consider growing such as the cinnamon fern, vegetable fern, royal fern and the most common ostrich fern. Some varieties can be grown in containers, but you’ll need a lot of them for a decent harvest.

    or crowns
  • compost
  • mulch
  • containers (optional)

The bad news is that when dealing with ferns, there are no seeds to sow. Ferns are grown from seedlings or crowns. The best time to transplant is after the last frost. Make sure that you find them their own little corner in your garden with well drained, rich soil and that you space them at least two feet apart. No extra fertilizer is required, however a layer of mulch is recommended.

Water your ferns at least once a week. Keep an eye out for slugs, scales, mildew and snails. Harvesting should not be done in the first year. However, after the first year you can remove a few fiddleheads from each plant. Harvest sparingly or you risk killing the plant, also never eat them raw. If you have a good harvest, you can store wrapped up in your fridge for about a week and a half.
