If you have ever been excluded from a family gathering or party, you probably know how this vegetable must feel. We have already looked at how to grow brussels sprouts, cabbage and even kholrabi in previous posts. Yet somehow I seem to have forgotten to feature how to grow broccoli, it is indeed a quagmire.
You would think that being one of the more popular cold weather veggies (Brassica oleracea), it would have been one of the first to be featured. Did you know that depending on your climate you could get as many as three harvests per year. In our area I have successfully been able to get two, a spring and a fall one. Actually, my little girls absolutely love it.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- broccoli seeds---------------------- Advertisement ----------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------- - seed starting mix
- seedling trays
- compost
- organic fertilizer
- mulch
It is recommended that you start by planting your seeds indoors at least a month before the last frost date. The seeds are planted half an inch deep in the seed starting mix and kept moist at all times while they grow. Also, before transplanting your seedlings to the garden, they should be hardened off.
Broccoli thrives in well drained soil in a location that receives 8 hours of sunlight during the day. Work some compost into the garden bed, and also add fertilizer at planting. Recommended plant spacing is 18 to 24 inches. Apply a layer of mulch and remember to water deeply every week. You will know it is harvest time when the tops are full and dark green. Snip them off and enjoy! 🙂
