How To Grow Acai Berries

I remember in the mid 2000s when this superfood was first introduced to western world by Oprah and Dr Oz. Back then we were still living in the city. Just like all the other exotic fruits I have experimented with like the dragon fruit and the sapodilla, I did some extensive research online on how to grow acai berries.

Since they are native to South and Central America, I was concerned that we would not have the appropriate conditions to grow these here on the homestead. It turns out that you can actually grow the dwarf variety in your greenhouse. Unlike the regular acai tree which can grow up to 90 feet, this one is way shorter. The acai berry itself has many health benefits, it is choke full of contain antioxidants, fiber and heart-healthy fats.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

You can grow them from seed or just buy seedlings from your local nursery. Extra special care is needed when growing from seed. Firstly, the seeds should be soaked in water for at least 24 hours before being planted one inch deep, in peat and perlite mix. The container should be covered with a clear plastic bag and ideally place on a heat mat until germination occurs in about 30 to 60 days.

At which time the plastic bag is then removed and the pot can be moved to a partially shaded area. Leave to grow to about 2 inches, before transplanting to tree pots filled with cactus and palm potting soil. Allow to grow for at least 180 days before transplanting to a well draining, fertile, partially shaded spot in your garden. Or just leave it to grow in your green house.

Keep well watered and apply organic fertilizer every few months. Generally speaking you can expect your tree to start producing fruit in about 3 to 5 years. When the time comes, you will see purple flowers just before the fruit appears. Fruit is usually available from the end of summer around July to December. I love this, this is about half a year of enjoying these super healthy berries.
