How To Freeze Rice

We all love and enjoy cooking rice for various meals and dishes. I have successfully frozen fresh cherries, avocado, watermelon, brocollifresh herbs, fresh corn and grapes in the past. However, to be honest I had never given thought or tried to experiment with freezing rice before, until just the other day.

Why would you want to freeze rice? Well there are many different reasons, but the most common one is to save yourself some time when it comes to making future meals, as you can just reheat it. We will be looking at freezing cooked rice, in this post. Frozen rice can be used for making fried rice, stews, pudding as well as stir frying which is what I used mine for last night.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • cooked rice
  • medium bowl
  • resealable containers
  • ziploc bags
  • microwave (optional)
  • medium pot (optional)
  • marker

The trick to freezing rice is to make more than you need the next time you cook some. Then you simply take the portion you are not using immediately and put it into a container in your fridge to cool overnight. This step is important as it helps to keep the granules separated and your rice will not become a huge sticky clump.

The next morning, you can then divide your rice into your desired portions. For our family of four, I put 4 cups into ziploc bags, and I popped them into the freezer. You can also use BPA free resealable plastic containers. Use a marker to write the date and type of rice, on the bag. When it is time to reheat the rice, place into a covered bowl and then into the microwave or over a pot with boiling water, like I did. 🙂
