Well it is no secret that we are growing a lot of herbs on the homestead. Yes that includes growing chives too. I have already shared with you how to dehydrate fresh chives to preserve them for future use. However, I now believe that freezing fresh chives maybe an even better way to go about it.
There are few added advantages to freezing versus dehydrating, especially when it comes to herbs. When you flash freeze, you are able to retain the fresh flavor for your dishes when you are cooking. It is said that the structure of chives helps, since they are hollow inside. Don’t worry the process itself is not complicated at all, it is pretty straight forward.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- fresh chives
- baking sheet
- baking paper
- sharp knife
- chopping board
- glass jars
Before you begin, make sure you prepare your baking tray by lining it with the paper. Your herbs must be thoroughly washed and then chopped into your preferred lengths. Then you just need to lay them on the tray in one layer and place in your freezer for up to 2 hours.
The chives should be completely frozen when you remove them from the freezer. At which point you can transfer them into sealed glass jars. Label them, including the date frozen and store in your freezer for 3 months. When it is time to use them, there is no need for thawing.
