How To Grow Oregano

A very common herb, that a lot of us use almost daily in our cooking. And yet it is surprising that up to now I still haven’t made a post on this blog on how to grow oregano. We have covered a lot of different herbs so far including how to grow thyme, how to grow sage and even how to grow saffron.

Although most commonly used in Italian cooking, you can pretty much use this herb in anything. The seed is very fine and extra care has to be taken when planting it. Planting from seed is way cheaper than buying seedlings from your local nursery. You can also grow oregano from cuttings, see the other video below.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The best way to plant oregano is using the over seeding method. You can expect germination in 7 to 14 days. If you are going to be transplanting into your garden, then the best time to plant it will be 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Pre-pack your tray cells before planting to provide a solid base for your seeds.

Pinch about 20 to 30 seeds into the top of each cell of the tray. Use your popsicle stick to gently mix the seed into the starter mix. If you have access to grow lights you can use those to aide germination and growth, otherwise just place the trays next to a window that gets a lot of sunlight during the day. Don’t forget to stick in some plant markers, with the name as well as the date on them.
