When I envision grapes, all I am actually seeing is dozens of wine racks loaded with bottles of wine! LOL. It is no secret that I love my wine and that is actually one of the main reasons why I started growing grapes from seed on the homestead. I’ve even experimented with growing grapes from cuttings and now that vine is established I want to build this diy wire trellis for grapes, to provide much needed support.
We have built a couple of different diy trellis designs for different plants in our garden, over the years. There have been easier designs than this one, whilst others were a bit more complicated. I think the only part of the construction process, I am not a fan of is the post hole digging. At least unlike other projects, only two holes are required for this one. We have a couple of old posts lying behind the shed, that will be perfect for this trellis.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 4″x 4″x 8′ fence posts
- 2″x 4″x 10′ wood peice
- 50 ft galvanized steel wire
- turnbuckles
- J-hooks
- eye screws
- crushed pothole gravel
- measuring tape
- shovel or spade
- level
- screwdriver
- handheld drill
- wire cutters
- miter saw
Your trellis will need some posts for support, therefore the first task at hand is to dig out the holes for the posts. Once the posts are in place, the holes are filled in mainly with crushed gravel and some dirt too. The top bar is then screwed into place and the pilot holes for the j hooks and eye screws are drilled into the insides of the posts. The final step, is the wire installation, were you’ll have the wire stretching from one eye hook to a turnbuckle. The turnbuckles are attached to the j-hooks and used to tighten the wire.
