Judging from the number of posts I have made on this blog covering different cookers, I do not think I can hide my love for them anymore. LOL. From the diy old satellite dish solar cooker, to the diy wonder box cooker and even this diy plow disc cooker. How about we add yet another one to the growing list, huh? I am talking about this diy straw box cooker.
Also commonly known as a Hay box cooker, the old survival and self sufficient books feature this being used for cooking as far back as a couple of centuries ago. It is a great way to slow cook food without relying on a constant heat source all day. Back in the days they used to insulate the box with hay or straw, hence the name. You can still do the same if you like, or just use blankets and towels instead.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- ice chest or cooler
- blankets
- bath towel
- crockpot
This ‘new and improvised’ version is simple to set up. Just fold the bath towel and lay it on the bottom of the cooler. The crockpot will sit on top of this towel. The blanket then covers the pot and is also tucked in around the sides to fully insulate the pot. Feel free to add another blankie on top of the pot, before you shut your cooler.
The food in the pot has to be cooking first before you can place it in the cooler. The best way to achieve this, is to use any available heat source to bring the contents to a boil. Only then can you transfer the pot into your cooker, and leave it to cook all day long without any additional heat. This setup is perfect for cooking your favorite stews and soups! 🙂
