How To Grow Cannellini Beans

Do you ever think the day will come when you would have tried every single type of bean grown on planet earth? I seriously doubt, that is possible. However, I am willing to give it my best shot. So far my favorites are black beans, pinto beans and green beans, in that order. I just learnt how to grow cannellini beans this season, and they are slowly creeping up that list too.

If you know any Italian, then you would have figured out from the name the origins of this white kidney shaped bean. I love that these beans are so easy to cook and are also loaded with protein. I had to order my seeds online, as no one I know had this particular type of bean. Now they are all asking me for seeds for next season. LOL

compost
mulch

The best location for your beans in your garden will be one that gets a lot of sun, and has well drained soil. After preparing the area, you want to mark your rows about 2 feet apart and work some compost into them before planting your seeds. The seeds themselves should be planted 2 to 3 inches apart at least an inch deep into the soil.

Regular weekly watering is recommended, after you apply some mulch to conserve water and prevent weeds. The beans are ready for harvest as soon as the pods start turning pale yellow in color. Initially you can pick the pods off the plant, but when fully ripe you can just pull out the whole plant from the ground.
