Unless you are currently on the popular Paleo diet, you are going to need to cook your food daily. I have shared many different stove designs on this blog, from this diy mud wood stove, to this diy propane tank wood stove to this diy outdoor wood stove. Some are more effecient than others like this diy Noflay clay brick stove, I recently discovered on Pinterest.
It is the brainchild of an organisation called Reap Canada, which has set out to install at least 2500 of these in remote villages of West Africa. The main advantages of using this particular stove include low cost, reduced wood consumption, convenience and little maintenance. You could probably build yourself one of these using their plans available online within just a few hours.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- fire bricks
- clay bricks
- mortar
- pit sand
- level
- shovel
- building tools
Like any other building, your stove will need a foundation. Not to deep though a few inches will do, then you lay down your foundation. The outer wall should be able to enclose your largest pots, when they are cooking on the stove. Inside the outer wall is your triangular combustion chamber. This also doubles up as the support for your pots. Don’t forget the front opening on the bottom about 5 inches wide for feeding wood into your stove.
Lay down your foundation, then your second layer both with the firewood opening. The third layer goes the whole way around followed by one complete layer and then the top layer with the opening in the front. The top two layers are slightly indented inwards leaving a small ledge the whole way around. This stove uses very small pieces of wood that fit into the feeder hole, they say it can boil about a gallon and a half of water in less than 20 minutes.
