We all want our chickens to lay eggs, but some of us forget to provide them with safe areas within the coop to lay them. That is why I always try to share different ideas with you on this blog. From the diy easy clean chicken nesting box to the diy old mailbox nesting box, these are all great options. If you need another great idea, how about this diy bookshelf chicken nest box?
This is one of those diy re-purposing projects, that I personally love to bits. Instead of throwing away an old bookshelf, why not convert it into nest boxes for your girls. If you have some scrap wood lying around and a few wood screws, this project will cost you absolutely nothing. Time wise, we are talking at the most an hour from start to completion.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- old bookshelf
- wood screws or nails
- handheld drill or hammer
- scrap wood
- wood shavings
- wire (optional)
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Remove any doors or hinges that maybe
attached to the book shelf.
Step 2.
Attach scrap wood to the front at the same level
as the shelf using a drill and screws.
Step 3.
Fill the box you created above with wood shavings
or straw, whatever you lay inside your other boxes.
That’s it you are done. You can then just lift it up and place it against one of the walls in your chicken coop. If you want to be super cautious, you can also secure the back of the bookshelf to the wall using wire. This will ensure that it stays in place and does not topple over and crush your hens, that maybe inside.
