Nowadays fewer and fewer people are posting letters. Which is a good thing though, because we get to use the mail boxes for projects like this one. We have already built this diy plastic tote nesting box and the diy plastic bucket nesting box for our coop. However, I absolutely fell in ‘like’ with this diy old mailbox nesting box idea.
I have to admit I have run into quite a lot diy nesting box ideas, in the last couple of years. Although you can build some from scratch, my favorite ones are the ones that re-purpose different things around the homestead. Take for example this particular one, that gives new life to old mailboxes that would have otherwise found their way to the junkyard.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- old large mailboxes
- wood shavings or hay
- wire or zip ties
- welding machine or electric etal shears
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Cut out the backs of the mailboxes.
Step 2.
Mount the mailboxes on the wall of your
chicken coop with the front facing outwards.
Step 3.
Lay down some wood shavings or hay
inside for your chickens ‘bedding’.
Step 4.
You’re done!
Now you won’t have to go inside your coop to collect eggs, simply open the mailbox and reach in to grab the eggs. You can also replace the nesting box bedding that way too. I think it is a pretty cool idea, that should give your friends and family something to talk about the next time they visit your coop. The only problem now is, where to get those old large mailboxes? LOL
