DIY Old Tire Nesting Box

It’s turning out to be one of those weeks were we revisit all our favorite re-purposing materials. I promise, I didn’t plan any of this out it just turned out that way. So the last time we made the diy old tire chicken dust bath and the diy recycled tires septic tank, right? How about these diy old tire nesting boxes, huh?

Judging from the number of diy nesting box ideas, I have now run into in the last couple of years. I firmly believe that you can turn almost anything into a nesting box. You just need a little will power and a lot of imagination. You will be repurposing those old tires for this project. I think next to wood pallets, old tires are probably one of the easiest things to get for free from anywhere or anyone. People are always ready to dispose of them. LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 2 medium old used tires
  • reciprocating saw
  • tape measure
  • marker
  • hay or straw
  • metal sheet
  • nuts and bolts
  • handheld drill
  • wire (optional)
  • washers (optional)
  • hacksaw (optional)

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Sit the tires on top of each other and measure out a rectangle that is 8 inches wide and about a foot deep. Leave at least 2 to 3 inches of edge on both the top and the bottom tires.

Step 2.

Cut out the measured area using either a reciprocating say or a hacksaw.

Step 3.

Sit the two tires on top of one another and drill one hole opposite the door you created above. You can also drill two extra holes, one on either side of the door.

Step 4.

Insert small bolts into the holes drilled above and screw on the nuts on the under side. You can add some washers too if you have some available.

Step 5.

Lay down some straw or hay on the floor of your nesting box for insulation. Also place the metal sheet on top and weigh or tie it down.

That’s all there is to this. If you place this in a corner of the coop, the girls will soon find it and start laying their eggs in there. I know some people may be wary of weighing down the roof. You can go the extra mile and drill more holes on the top and then use some wire or bolts to attach the roof on to the top tire. If you have more time to spare, feel free to paint the tires before attaching them together.
