DIY Angled Tomato Rails

Have you ever tried growing your tomatoes, without any form of support? If you have never attempted it, you should never ever try it. This is why over the years I have shared many different ideas for support such as the diy pvc tomato cages and the diy wooden tomato cages. In today’s post I will be introducing you to these diy angled tomato rails.

The original version were made using tobacco sticks, that are usually found in the tobacco growing areas. However, if you have any scrap wood or even strong sticks that can replace these, feel free to use those instead. The stronger the structure you build, the easier it will be to pull out the ground and re-use the following season.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Lay out your tobacco sticks on the ground
to form a grid 3 times high and 8 sticks long.

Step 2.

Use the twine or the wire to tie your
sticks firmly together.

Step 3.

Plant your tomato seedlings in a row.

Step 4.

Insert the completed rail into the ground
on either side of your tomato plants at an angle.

This type of cage works by containing the growth of the plant in between the two angled rails. As a result the plant is forced to grow upwards. If you see any plants slouching you can tie them to the rails using wire or twine. Sometimes, the tomato plants may become heavy and you may need to support the rails from the outside using extra stakes.
