DIY Tomato String Trellis

We all love to grow tomatoes in our gardens, and over the years we have used different types of support systems. From the diy wooden tomato cages, to the diy angled tomato rails and even the diy pvc tomato trellis. This season we even tried this diy tomato string trellis, and it worked out great.

Seriously they are so many different diy tomato trellis ideas, that you could adopt. It usually depends on your budget, number of plants and your space. The good thing is that most of them are easy to set up, just like this one. The other advantage of using this design is that you will be able to double or even triple your overall growing space. Get more tomatoes, from a few plants.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Dig your poles into the ground opposite
each other in the row of tomatoes.

Step 2.

Push the anchors that will hold the poles
in place into the ground a foot or so away.

Step 3.

Tie the wire from the anchor to the top of the pole
onto the top of the other pole, and down to the other anchor.

Step 4.

Tie another wire across the poles horizontally,
right at the bottom, about a foot off the ground.

Step 5.

Throw the twine up and down vertically over the
wires, the tomato vines will climb up these.

Step 6.

Place the 2×2 in the middle, directly below the
top wire. This will provide, much needed support.

Setting up a trellis this way help you increase your total growing area, as this allows the vine to grower taller than usual and therefore produce more tomatoes. The 2×2 that you placed in the middle will help support the top wire so that it does not sag from all the added weight.

Any Maintenance? The only maintenance required is, every few days you should wrap your tomato plant’s main vine around the twine a few times or so. You should also take some time to prune off any extra branches on the plant, that are not crawling up the twine with the main vine.
