There are some things in life that will always happen, no matter how hard you try to prevent them. Having your pillows eventually turn yellow after months of sleeping on them is one of those ‘sure’ things. I have shown you how to clean old cookie sheets and how to remove stains from plastic cutting boards in earlier posts. Today, I will be showing you how to wash and whiten your yellowed pillows.
So you are probably wondering why pillows eventually turn yellow, even after you cover them with pillow cases? Well there is two reasons actually, that is your night sweat and drivel. As your body tries to maintain the right temperature, it sweats and when the sweat dries up it leaves yellow stains on the pillows. This specific cleaning method only requires water and 2 other ingredients. No bleach is needed nor will you be required to soak the pillows, before washing them.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup laundry detergent
- 6 to 8 cups of water
- large pot
- 2 tennis balls
- 2 socks
Step By Step Instructions:
Step 1.
Boil your water in your large pot.
Step 2.
Mix the baking soda and the laundry detergent in a plastic container.
Step 3.
Add the contents of your plastic container and the water to your washing machine.
Step 4.
Set your machine timer to the longest wash mode and run your machine.
Step 5.
Place each tennis ball inside a sock and tie a knot around the top end. Drop both of them into your dryer with your pillows and run your dryer.
The tennis balls help flatten and fluff your pillows as they dry, ensuring they are nice and ready for use when you pull them out of there. It is important that you wash your pillows at least two times a year, using the method above. Always check the label on your pillows to make sure they are washable before throwing them into the washing machine. I find I get better results when I wash a maximum of two pillows at a time.
