It is not a homestead until you have a mouse problem, that is what my neighbor said to me a few years back. That lead to some quick research and this diy 5 gallon bucket mouse trap. Which works great but is not suitable for all mouse situations. Recently I discovered this diy magic mouse box, which I have since fallen in love with.
Although there are many different mouse trap designs, quite a lot of them fail dismally when it comes to the field tests. This is why this simple ‘box’ design is genius. Additionally, it should not cost you an arm and a leg. We used left over plywood and lumber that we never seem to run out of. The only cost really was the mouse traps, we decided to get new ones.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- plywood
- 2x4s
- wood screws or nails
- hammer
- hand held drill
- marker
- hinge
- tape measure
- miter saw
We are going to need to measure our plywood and 2x4s and then cut the required pieces. That is really the bulk of the hard work. After which you spend a few minutes putting everything together using the wood screws or nails. The top uses the hinge to attach itself to the box. This will allow you easy access to the mouse traps inside.
With this type of trap, location is key. The best location is right in the middle of mice activity. For us, we decided on one of the corners in our chicken coop. It is really interesting that this trap does not require any bait. There will be no free meals for the mice. 🙂
