How To Grow Artichokes

Oh, ohhh here is yet another one of those that in my head I was sure I had already shared some tips on this blog. But alas, in reality I have probably only mentioned them in recipes. Anywho, after last weeks post on how to grow cocktail kiwis, I thought today I would just keep it simple and talk about growing artichokes in your garden instead.

The good news is that, they are actually not difficult to grow. Even a novice gardener, can successfully grow some at first try. Of course, you can make your life so much easier by doing a little research and learning some quick tips. They can be stuffed, added to soups, used to make herbal tea and even a liquer called Cynar in Italy. There are a few different varities available such as Green Globe, Tempo & Violetto which tends to be more elongated.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Generally you can start your artichokes from seeds or propogation. The whole seed germination process can often be a daunting one, so it is recommended you just start with seedlings instead. They thrive in fertile well drained soil and require at the very minimum 5 hours of sunlight every single day. Apply a layer of mulch to help reduce evaporation.

Mulching will also help keep the weeds at bay, however keep an eye out for slugs they may attack your plants. Fertilization should be done at least once every four weeks and try to water every single week. They should be ready for harvest within 80 to 100 days depending on the variety. You will know they are ready to be harvested when the bulbs start to open slightly.
