OMG! These actually look like mini watermelons when you cut them into slices. You’ll be disappointed though by the taste if you are expecting them to be sweet too. I always love trying to grow new varieties in my garden. In previous posts, we have looked at how to grow butter lettuce, how to grow yellow pear tomatoes and how to grow curly kale. Why don’t we explore how to grow watermelon radishes, in today’s post?
Essentially, they are a root vegetable which is a member of the Brassica family as well as an heirloom variety of daikon radishes. In China they are called ShinRi-Mei, and this is where they are believed to have originated from. Don’t be fooled by the name though, they do not taste like a watermelon at all. Instead they have a milder taste than other radishes, which is a little less peppery. The perfect time to plant them is between early to late spring.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Before direct sowing your seeds into the garden, make sure that you have prepped the soil. Depending on your soil type, you may have to add compost and fertilizer. Ideally you want to wait a few weeks after the last frost to allow the soil temperature to increase a little, in order to speed up germination.
The seeds are initially sown in rows 6 inches apart, at a depth of about half an inch. Make sure that you water regularly and get ready to thin out to an inrow spacing of 2 inches, once the seedlings are at least an inch tall. If well taken care of, your radishes should be ready for harvest in about 65 days.
