How To Grow Starfruit

Twinkle, twinkle little star… how I wonder what you are? One of my favorite nursery rhymes growing up, and ever since I have been fascinated by the stars. In our orchard we now have a wide selection of exotic fruit trees such as the custard apples, dragon fruit and even mangosteen. I was feeling the itch to add another new one and that led to my research on how to grow star fruit.

Star fruit also known as Carambola, has its roots somewhere in South East Asia and the Indian Ocean Islands. To be honest, what I really like about this fruit is its star shape, which becomes even more enhanced when ripe. Although the tree itself thrives in warm areas, if you plant it in a pot you should be able to grow this anywhere by making use of a greenhouse, especially during the colder months of the year.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Although it is sometimes possible to grow this fruit from seed, it is generally recommended that you purchase a young startfruit tree from your nursery or online. I would love to give seed germination a try, but I think this time around I will ‘cheat’. However, I have included videos below for anyone who maybe interested in giving it a try too. Good luck!

When planting the young tree outside, you want to find a location that gets partial to full sun during the day. There must also be plenty of space around the tree itself ,at least 25 feet to allow it to grow. Don’t expect any fruit for the first 2 to 3 years. In the meantime, remember to water your tree and also prune it to keep it from getting out of hand. The fruit can be enjoyed when it is still green if you like it sour, otherwise wait for it to turn yellow.
