How To Build A Pole Barn

When you think of a farm or a homestead, what is the one other building you expect to be erected besides the simple house or log cabin? In my case, I always picture some sort of barn on the property. Which is funny, because up until now we are still yet to build one on our homestead. It is something that we kept pushing back until recently when I started looking at some ideas on how to build a pole barn.

As far as I have gathered, this type of barn is not only cheaper to build, but it is also one of the easier ones. With my repurposing skills, I think we can actually cut down the cost considerably and still have a structure that we could be proud of. I found these plans for one that was built in just 4 hours for a total cost of about $600. Afterall, you just want to build a structure with a roof held up by a few poles. Any walls or stalls are optional and can be added on as needed at a later date.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • pressure treated wood
  • non-pressure treated wood
  • treated wood
  • furring strip
  • metal roofing sheets
  • roofing screws with rubber gaskets
  • nail gun or hammer
  • wood screws & nails
  • post digger
  • miter saw
  • jigsaw
  • concrete mix (optional)
  • tape measure
  • level

The best location for your barn should be somewhere close enough for easy access but also flat. With your location spotted you can measure out and mark your where your posts will go, before the digging can begin. I have learnt from past projects that when it comes to poles it is always wise to use pour in some concrete into the holes for a stronger hold. Remember, every building needs a strong foundation.

With the poles in thr ground, the roof is next. It is built in two stages, first the roof supports are attached to the poles and then the process is completed by adding the rafters and then screwing on the roofing sheets. All in all, it seems like a lot of work right? However, with the right tools, skills and help, this project should not take up too much of your time. I think we will call my brother in law Todd, to come give us a hand, when we get started on ours! 🙂
