We tend to have many excuses for not starting our composts as gardeners, and over the years I have been trying to get rid of as many of those as possible. I know composting ideas such as diy cinder block compost and the diy 3 bin compost system may actually require you to purchase material for building the bin itself. How about this diy stick compost bin idea, a friend shared with me the other day.
What grabbed my attention with this design was the fact that they use sticks to build the outer wall or cage. How come you never thought of that? Well neither did I. *grin* The obvious advantages are that the compost itself becomes all natural and you save money as you can just collect the sticks for the wall from in and around your homestead. It.s funny how the simple ideas are always the most exciting, right?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- straight sticks
- weeds
- grasss
- dried leaves
- chicken poop
- saw
- string, twine or wire (optional)
So the great thing about this design, is you can pretty much replicate it by just studying the picture above. Starting with one layer on the ground you can gradually build your walls by locking the sticks together to create that natural cage effect. It is recommended that the sticks are at least 4 feet long and as straight as possible. Grab your saw and go out into the woods to collect your sticks, and stack them close to your desired compst location for easy access.
As far as improvements to this idea, what I would do is perhaps tie each corner using some string, twine or wire. This way the cage will be stronger, sturdier and more durable. You don’t want the goats to accidentally ram into it and disturbe your cooking compost heap. What should you put into your bin once complete? The same stuff as you would with any other compost. The the original idea linked below, shares some tips on what they added into theirs, check it out.
