The hamburger buns would feel very naked without these sprinkled all over the top of them. I have already shared how to grow mustard seeds and how to grow cumin from seeds on this blog. However, the other day when I was sharing one of the recipes, I realized we still had not explored how to grow sesame seeds.
The scientific name is Sesamum Indicum and this is the plant that produces the seeds. Why do we love this seed so much? Well, not only can it be used in your baking, seasoning and cooking. It is also packed with calcium, potassium, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, magnesium as well as protein. In ancient times they even made wine using these seeds.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
The best way to get these started is indoors a couple of weeks before the last frost. You want to set up a seedling tray with a good starter mix and plant the seeds a quarter inch deep. Water well and you germination should occur within 2 weeks. Keep the seedlings indoors until the weather is warm enough (about 70 degrees F) for transplanting.
The perfect location in your garden should have well drained soil and a lot of sunlight. You should aim to get the plants well established, then you do not have to water them as much. The seeds should be ready for harvest within 100 to 135 days. The hulling process can be quite a lot of work if not done correctly.
