Some say potatoe, others say potato. It doesn’t matter what you call them, we all know and enjoy them. Over the past couple of years, we have covered various methods for growing potatoes. From growing potatoes in upside down buckets, to growing potatoes in old tires and we even tried growing potatoes in a trash bag. In today’s post, we will be building these diy homemade potatoe crates.
Although I have soaked in vast amounts of potato growing tips, I am always ready and willing to learn something new. This project is special, in that we can use scrap wood and also reuse wood pallets. Ultimately, that means not only will you be saving the environment but your wallet will be happy too. The only thing I don’t like when working with pallets, is having to dismantle them. Thank goodness, we only need to pry out a few boards, to build each crate. This same method can also be used for growing sweet potatoes.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- seed potatoes
- 2 x 4’s
- wood pallet
- garden soil
- wood screws
- miter saw
- straw
- shredded leaves
- tape measure
- marker
- chicken mesh wire (optional)
The dimensions for your crate are provided with the plans below, simply measure and make the required cuts. As far as assembly is concerned, you need to construct two rectangles using the 2×4’s one is for the top the other is for the bottom. The pallet boards are then attached to the sides to complete the crate. The first layer of the special garden mix is added as the bottom layer and only then can the first seed potatoes be planted.
