For many of us when we think it is time to watch a movie, this is the snack that we think about. Not a year goes by without us growing sweet corn in our garden. We even have experimented it when we set up the three sisters garden about two years ago. With all this knowledge and experience, I still did a little bit more research online on how to grow popcorn in your garden.
Well, just like any other homegrown produce, they will always be healthier and often tastier than the store bought option. You can grow yours organically and avoid using any harmful chemicals. I found out that there are many different varieties as well as colors of popcorn. There are available in gold, white, black and even maroon. Whenever you find popcorn you like, you can plant a few of the seeds and water them. If most of them germinate within a week, go ahead and plant more in your garden.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
Plant your seeds in rows 8 to 10 inches apart and about 1 1/2 inches deep. In order to speed up germination, it is recommended that you soak your seeds for at 12 hours before planting. You can encourage pollination by keeping your rows short and 2 to 3 feet apart. Work some compost into the soil before planting, and then apply some natural fertilizer to give them a much needed nitrogen boost when the stalks are about knee height.
It is very important that you keep your popcorn patch weed free, to encourage growth. Also water well throughout the growing season which will take between 100 to 120 days. When it comes to harvesting you can either remove the ears and dry them in the sun or wait them to completely dry on the plant before removing them. One last thing, in order to minimize cross pollination with sweet corn, it might not be a bad idea to plant the two at opposite ends of your garden.
