When you first build your home or cabin on the homestead, you probably cut a few corners in order to get things done as fast as possible so you can move. One area that most people tend to short change is storage. We are guilty as charged, but have been slowly trying to remedy the situation over the years. For example, we added the diy hanging canned food storage to the pantry and built the diy wood pallet boat shelf for the books. I want smaller shelves for our living room and I these diy industrial pipe shelves, might work.

Why not just go for the regular shelves, I hear you ask? Well first of all, it just so happens that we have a whole bunch of industrial nipples lying around in our shed out back, that I got for free. As for the wood or lumber, there is also a lot of that left over from various other projects. Therefore, it just makes sense not to waste money buying more stuff when I can reuse some of these materials already available.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

3/4″ floor flanges
3/4″ caps
3/4″ x 8″ nipples
coarse thread drywall screws
plywood board
black spray paint
measuring tape
miter saw
hacksaw
phillips head screwdriver
pencil
level
soap
water

Of course, when you are repurposing materials, they tend not to be clean hence there will be a lot of scrubbing and washing before spray painting begins. Also the pipe and the boards are going to need to be cut before hand too. The easiest way is probably to first measure out the area you want to install the shelves. With those measurements in hand you can then go ahead and cut the boards for your shelves.

Since these are shelves, ideally you want them to be as level as humanly possible. This is the job of the level, but I always try to mark and check until I satisfied before screwing anything in place. When you have your pipes in place, I would suggest that you double check with the level again, just to be certain. Alright, let’s get into the full on diy now, shall we?
