This type of garden is a traditional native American garden. I am just one of those people that enjoy trying out many different methods of growing plants in the garden. This is why yesterday I decided to look into how to grow a three sisters garden.
What I love about this method, is that the three sisters corn, beans and pumpkin or squash support each other as they grow. The corn provides support as well as shade, the beans release nitrogen into the soil and the squash provides the much needed mulch as well as protection from pests.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- corn seeds
- beans seeds
- melon. pumpkin or squash seeds
- compost
- gardening tools
You need to find and prepare a spot in your garden at least four square feet in size in early spring. You can plant the seeds when late spring arrives you can start by planting the corn seeds in a circle 6 inches apart. Make sure you water the seeds well so that they germinate. Plant in rows or in raised garden beds, it is up to you.
Wait a few weeks for the corn to grow to between 5 to 10 inches tall, then you plant the bean seeds an inch deep around each corn stalk. Last but not least is the squash, pumpkin or melon seeds about 7 days later. They are planted around the ring created by both the corn and the beans. Assist your squash vines as they grow, so they grow towards the center of the ring.
