How To Dry Fresh Oregano

When you are as good at herb gardening as I am and you end up with all these fresh herbs, one problem always seems to pop up. How do you preserve as much of the fresh herbs as possible? I have already shared how to oven dry fresh herbs and how to dry chives. Just last week I discovered how to dry fresh oregano.

The good news is that, it is an insanely easy process. We have a very small microwave, that I hardly ever use as it requires a lot of solar generated power. However, I twisted the hubby’s arm and he let me use it this once, as long as it was for a few minutes and during the day. I loved the end result, the dried herbs still have a nice color.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh oregano leaves
  • microwaveable glass plate
  • paper towels
  • microwave
  • air tight container or mason jar

Lay one or two sheets of paper towel on the plate. Then the Oregano leaves are laid out on a single layer and covered with another paper towel sheet. Place the plate in the microwave and run on high for 60 seconds. After the first minute, you can run it again every 15 seconds until the leaves are dry.

Remove from the microwave and start manually removing the stems. It may take a few minutes depending on how many leaves you dried. Use your fingers to crush the leaves before storing in an airtight container or mason jar. Store in a cool dry place.
