How To Grow Agrimony

Usually when I mention herbs on this blog, they are the edible type that you use in your cooking. We are talking about herbs such as basil, thyme, oregano and rosemary. Today I decided to switch things a little and look at how to grow agrimony, which is grown mainly for its medicinal benefits.

Agrimony (Agrimonia) like many other herbs is known by several different names worldwide. Some call it livewort, others call it sticklewort, philanthropos, church steeples and even garclive. For centuries it has been successfully used to treat diarrhea, insomnia, snake bites, jaundice, menstrual issues, blood loss, coughs as well as sore throat. That is an impressive list, if I should say so myself.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • agrimony seeds
  • seedling starter mix (optional)
  • seedling trays (optional)
  • grow lights (optional)

Agrimony prefers well drained soil and a location that gets a lot of sun. You have the option of starting your seeds indoors or directly into the soil. Transplant seedlings or plant directly after the last frost. Seed spacing should be about 12 inches and allow up 1 to 4 weeks for seeds to germinate.

This is a very low maintenance plant, just make sure to water it lightly until the it establishes itself. Then after that water only when the soil dries out. It will take about 3 to 4 months before it is ready for harvesting. A little patience is required, just keep yourself busy with other areas in the garden in the meantime.
