It’s starting to look like we are going to spend this week revisiting all my old favorite things to do on the homestead. After I shared how to make the diy cheese press, the other week I thought it would be wonderful if I shared this homemade cheddar cheese recipe with you.
We actually haven’t featured many homemade hard cheeses yet, so this should be interesting. It is recommended that you own a dedicated pot just for your cheese making, often called the cheese pot. Also try to only use stainless steel utensils or tools and your choice for salt should be one that does not have any iodine. Ready to make some cheese?
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- milk
- cheese pot with a lid
- large stock pot or water bath canner---------------------- Advertisement ----------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------- - dairy thermometer
- mesophilic starter culture
- rennet
- stainless steel whisk or long knife
- cheese ladle
- stainless steel colander
- french fry mill or cutter
- coarse cheese salt or pickling salt (optional)
All your utensils should be sterilized by boiling them in your cheese pot filled with water. The water will be used for heating up the cheese as you make it, transfer it to the water bath canner. The cheese pot should sit comfortably in the larger pot or canner as you make your cheese. Pour the milk into the cheese pot to begin the cheese making process.
