How To Grow Dill

It has been my goal, to feature as many of the less common herbs as possible on this blog. Evidently I have been doing a great job, if you read the posts on growing saffron, growing lemon balm  and growing lemongrass. So much for tooting my own horn *insert naughty giggle*. Moving on today let us take a look at how to grow dill, shall we?

Like most herbs, this dill (Anethum graveolens) is pretty easy to grow. An added advantage is the ability to attract insects which benefit your garden such as wasps and other predatory insects too. There are a few different varieties available. For example, the Mammoth variety is great for producing large seeds, whilst the Bouquet produces plenty of fern leaf which is used in pickling, salads, soups and fish dishes.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • dill seeds
  • compost
  • organic fertilizer
  • scissors (optional)

Dill seeds are best planted directly into your garden, and then thinned out. Plant your seeds at least a quarter inch deep and about 18 inches apart in early summer. Germination should occur in about 2 weeks. Wait another 14 days before thinning out your plants. The best companion plants for your dill are onions and cabbage.

Keep well watered and plant regularly throughout the growing season for a constant supply. I clip away all the flowers and this helps extend the harvesting period. Leaf spot may affect your dill, keep an eye out for that. Harvest when there are 4 to 5 leaves on the plant, simply pinch them off or use a a pair of kitchen scissors. If you do not disturb the soil, the seeds usually will self sow the following year.
