I personally think that our outdoor patio area is becoming a bit crowded, but the hubby begs to differ. So far we have the diy wood pallet outdoor bar, diy simple outdoor bench and also the diy wooden outdoor sofa in there. I may have to replace one of those with this awesome diy outdoor bench with planters, that we want to add out there.

The build itself was pretty straight forward, however very repetitive. We decided the best way to tackle this project to avoid boredom, would be to stagger the work over a few days. In order to save on the total cost, we then decided to sneak in some reclaimed wood pallet and left over lumber. Otherwise you have the option of building it using pine or cedar wood. Pine being the cheaper of the two.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

2×4s
1×6s
wood glue
2-1/2″ deck screws
3″ cedar deck screws
moulding hardwood 3/8 birch head plugs
circular saw
sanding sheets
wood filler natural tube
wood finish
paint brush
8″ clay pots
ferns or plants of your choice
potting soil
decorative pillows
wood paint (optional)

On the first day, we set about making sure we had all the required cuts. Then the next day I spent the whole afternoon sanding the pieces. By day 3, we were ready to start assembling everything starting with the bottom boards and using the wood glue and screws to hold everything together. The planters are erected first, then the frame for the bench is used to attach the two planters on each side.

Then when it came to finishing up the bench, I filled in any uneven spots with wood fill and gave the whole bench another sanding before applying the wood tint. I am thinking of painting it too, just haven’t made up my mind on which color to use. You can plant pretty much anything inside the planters, for now I have some wild ferns in there. I feel like it would make it more interesting, to change up the plants every now and again! 🙂
