As for me, it is not a summer garden unless it has cucumbers in it. Since I have successfully grow spinach in pots, brussels sprouts in pots as well as grown kale in containers in the past. I thought to myself how much harder could it be to grow cucumbers in plastic buckets, huh?
Instead of using pots, we will use 5 gallon plastic buckets for this gardening project. This will be a great way to re-purpose them, especially those that may have developed leaks. Otherwise, you can always buy them from your local hardware store for a few bucks. Although you could probably plant the seeds in the bucket, planting the seedlings will just speed up the whole process.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- cucumber seeds or seedlings
- 5 gallon plastic buckets
- soap
- water
- handheld drill
- potting soil
- slow-release vegetable fertilizer
- 20-20-20 water-soluble fertilizer
- bricks or wood blocks
The first thing you want to do is make sure that your buckets are clean, especially if you are reusing them. Residual harmful chemicals could kill your cucumber plants. Your bucket needs drainage on the bottom, use the drill to drill a few holes on the bottom to allow for drainage.
When it comes to fertilizer, you can either apply a slow release one at planting or continuously apply a water soluble one every two weeks. Whatever works for you, for me I prefer to do it at the beginning because the chances of me forgetting mid-season, are very high! LOL
