Homemade Green Onion Powder

Initially when I started dehydrating my garden produce, it was a way to save storage space. That was of course until I discovered homemade tomato powder and homemade garlic powder. Now that I have become addicted to dehydrating stuff, my latest experiment involved making this homemade green onion powder.

If you don’t have this in you spice rack, I highly recommend that you add it as soon as possible. It is perfect for adding flavor to soups, chili, dressings, sauces, dips and seasoning meat. For the best quality powder, you want to try use the healthiest green onion stalks. Pick out the longest, greenest ones and cook the rest whilst their still fresh. This recipe will need about 15 minutes of prep time.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

As with most fresh garden produce, the first thing you must do is wash them. Pull out your cutting board and separate the green stalks from the white parts. After that I chop the green stalks into small chunks, which I then lay in a single layer on the dehydrator trays. Processing may take anything from 8 to 12 hours.

The onion should be crisp and brittle when done. At which point they will be ready for the final stage in the spice grinder. At the end of it all you should have a nice flavorful green powder, which can be stored in a glass jar or an airtight container. Store in the same cool area that you keep all your herbs and spices. 🙂
