DIY Birdseed Cakes

Bird watching is something I have always enjoyed, even when I was a young girl. It is funny though that the only birds I have featured on this blog are the edible ones such as the quail, guinea fowl, turkeys and of course chickens. I thought I would switch things up a little today and introduce you to these diy birdseed cakes.

Now don’t get excited this is not one of those cake recipes, that you are used to that you bake in the oven. Although flour is one of the ingredients, there will be no baking involved. Luck will have it that these bird cakes are perfect for the cooler months, they won’t be able to stand up to the heat during the warmer months or climates.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The first thing I do is sit a large stockpot of water on the stove and leave it to boil. Meanwhile I get the molds ready, by spraying the cooking spray to prevent the cakes from sticking to them. You can mix the ingredients in a separate mixing bowl, but if you want to have fewer dishes to wash, then the pot works too.

It is important that once you have the gelatin mixed in you work as fast as possible before it begins to set. Half the mixture goes into the mold, then you carefully insert the string or twine before adding the rest. Remember we said no baking? Well that is because the cakes are actually left to set in your fridge or freezer overnight.
