Unless you enjoy making Mediterranean recipes, you have probably never heard of these. Although they are becoming more and more popular these days. Just like the post on how to grow chervil and growing fenugreek, you may want to also learn how to grow your own capers in your backyard garden.
Their scientific name is Capparis Spinosa. They are also known flinders rose and they are originally from the Mediterranean region. A few countries in that region are producing them commercially, as there is a high demand for them for cooking. They are also believed to have some medicinal benefits and sometimes used in cosmetics too. The salted and pickled caper bud is often used as a seasoning or garnish.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- caper seeds or cuttings---------------------- Advertisement ----------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------- - compost
- lime
These bushes thrive in hot conditions, they not only require well drained soil but also full sun. It is recommended that you plant them on ridges like they do on commercial enterprises in order to encourage drainage. Although it is possible to grow them for seed, it is easier to grow them from bushes or cuttings.
Just before the winter months, you should prune the bushes in order to encourage growth the next season. You should keep your eye out for caterpillars, as they tend to love munching on the leaves. When harvest time comes, the best time to pick the buds is in the morning when the buds are still tight before the heat loosens the bud.
