How To Grow Chervil

I am slowly starting to feel like we have probably tried growing every edible plant known to man in our garden. LOL I don’t think that is even possible, but it certainly feels like it. Last week I shared how to grow lovage and the week before it was how to grow scallions. This week, we are still talking about herbs, but this time we will be looking at how to grow chervil.

Anthriscus cerefolium as it is known by its scientific name, is pretty easy to grow. Its origins have been traced back to South eastern Europe. If you ever need a substitute for parsley, this is your go to herb. Although the taste is noticeably different, it still is pretty similar. In the kitchen you can also use the leaves in your soups, stews, salads, potato dishes, pork, veal, fish, seafood, and even your egg dishes.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

You have the option of either sowing the seeds indoors and transplanting them after the last frost. Or you could just direct plant into well drained location in your garden. Make sure that you work in some compost into your garden beds before sowing the seeds or transplanting seedlings. Germination occurs in one to two weeks.

No extra fertilizer is needed but you can add some more compost mid season if you wish. As for watering try to keep the soil moist at all times. Keep an eye out for aphids, earwigs, carrot weevils as well as leaf spot. Your leaves should be ready for harvest within 6 to 8 weeks of sowing. Simply snip them off with a pair or scissors to use as desired.
