Is it a blueberry? Nope! Ok, then why does it look exactly like a blueberry? Well, they could be related! LOL. In earlier blog posts we looked at how to grow blueberries, how to grow saskatoon berries and how to grow honeyberries. Believe it or not, we are not done with the ‘berries’ there’s more. Yep, in today’s post we will be learning how to grow bilberries in your own backyard.
Vaccinium myrtillus also known as the European blueberry, this cousin of the blueberry is mainly found in the wild. Although very similar to blueberries they tend to grow on the twigs instead of in clusters. However, they too are choke full of antioxidants, as well as vitamin C. They contain chemicals called tannins, some of the known health benefits include better heart, vision as well as brain function, plus reducing swelling. Bilberries tend to thrive in cooler climates, usually USDA zones 3 through 8.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- bilberry plants
- mulch
- shovel
- compost (optional)
Although they can be grown from seed, it is probably easier and wiser to just purchase young plants in containers to plant. Ideally, you want to transplant your plants into an area with well drained, acidic soil preferably after the last frost. When the plant is in the ground, don’t forget to apply some mulch. There is no fertilizer to be applied and remember to only water when the soil dries up. They should be ready for harvest in the fall.
