How To Grow Honeyberries

Remember the movie ‘Honey, I shrunk the kids’? Oddly enough, that was the first thing that I thought of when I heard of these berries. After growing dewberries and even growing elderberries in our garden, I was sure I had pretty much grown all the berries in the world. LOL. Then my good friend Susan, just had to ask me if I had ever tried growing honeyberries?

After doing some quick research on the internet, I have since discovered that Honeyberries (Lonicera caerulea) are also known as the honeyberry, haskap berry, blue-berried honeysuckle, or sweetberry honeysuckle. They are native to Japan, Russia, Canada as well as Poland, but are now being grown in the United States too. These berries thrive in the the cooler temperature climates and have a honey like flavor, hence the name.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Although, you can grow these berries from seeds it is way easier if you propagate them from cuttings or just purchase a young bush. It is recommended that you grow them in pots, instead of your garden. The pots must have well drained soil and be in a sunny location for most of the day. During the hot summer months, try to provide the bushes with shade around midday.

As far as watering is concerned, just make sure that the soil is moist at all times. Apply fertilizer once every spring and do not worry about having to prune the plant either. What you can do instead is just remove clip away any dead twigs and branches. Their fruit is ready for harvest early, even earlier than your strawberries. They can start producing fruit in the first year and continue producing for up to 30 years or more.
