How To Get Rid Of Gnats

OMG! Who ordered an extra helping of these pesky insects for our backyard this summer? Usually we only have to worry about mosquitoes or fruit flies but we have the natural mosquito repellent and the homemade king fruit fly traps to deal with those. The other day I found my self Googling how to get rid of gnats, that is just how bad the problem is this year.

Although I found a few solutions on how to get rid of gnats, I only wanted those that did not require me to open my wallet. That means no bug sprays, no fancy bug zappers or traps. Just simple homemade solutions that anyone can use. Did you know that the carbon dioxide we exhale attracts them to us? Don’t try to hold your breath though, to get rid of them. LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • apple cider vinegar
  • hand soap or dish washing soap
  • small bowl
  • toothpick
  • sugar
  • red wine
  • plastic wrap
  • rotten fruit
  • candle
  • candle stick holder
  • hair spray (optional)

Solution #1: Apple Cider Vinegar & Soap

In a small bowl mix equal parts of vinegar and hand or dish washing soap. Just sit the dish outside on your patio table or side table, and you should start to see the gnats getting trapped in the solution.

Solution #2: Wine & Sugar

Sacrifice some of your old wine, mix it with a few tablespoons of sugar in a small bowl. Take the plastic wrap and cover the bowl. Use the toothpick to poke holes in the plastic wrap.

Solution #3: Candle & Water

Place a candle into a holder, light it up and place it in small bowl of water with dish washing liquid. The light will attract them, then approach it and ultimately plunge into the death trap that awaits them .

Solution #4: Rotten Fruit

Yes, although rotten fruit usually attracts them, you can use it to control them too. They will be attracted to the fruit instead of them bugging you. Over ripe bananas are perfect for this.

Solution #5: Hair Spray

For all those other times when you are feeling lazy to set up the traps above, you can just spray hair spray instead. It sticks to their wings and paralyzed them, since they won’t be able to fly.
