Just when you thought those pennies you have been collecting in that jar on top of your fridge were useless, you run into this post. You have probably been doing everything else right with your tomatoes, including prunning them. Now you can fight the dreaded tomato blight using pennies.

Due to many centuries of use, copper is known to posess the ability to control everything from microbes, algae, fungi as well as molds. Since pennies are made from coper or at the very least have a copper coating, they can help you control or slow down blight. This is an old wives tale, backed with scientific research.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

This method is pretty simple, to use. Before you begin make sure that you have prunned and tied your tomatoes first. Then using the picture above as a guide, make a cut in the stem and slip your pennies into it. Make sure it is a tight fit, so that watering, rain or even wind can not dislodge the penny.

Alternatively, in a bid to protect the lower leaves which are using the first ones to suffer you can insert a copper wire mesh, a few inches above the ground. The mesh will lie horizontally and do doubl duty protecting the plant from dust particles from the ground and preventing leaves from falling to the ground.
